NETHERLANDS - Kingdom of the Netherlands

The Netherlands, a small and densely-populated country, sits at the heart of Europe's land and sea transportation networks. The thriving economy is based on industry, intensive agriculture and trade.

Although the Netherlands is one of the largest producers and distributors of natural gas, its crude oil production remains insignificant.

The Dutch, however, operate numerous petroleum refineries. They import crude oil into Rotterdam (Europe's largest port) and export refined petroleum to the rest of Europe.

The Royal Dutch Shell multinational oil company, one of the world's largest corporations, is based here.
