MEXICO - United Mexican States

Mexico is the world's 6th largest oil producer and the 3rd largest supplier to the U.S. But Mexican oil reserves may have peaked.

Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex, has a monopoly on the entire Mexican petroleum infrastructure. For many years the company endured a slim profit margin, but recent price spikes have brought in substantial income. The Mexican government now gets one-third of its total revenue from Pemex.

Mexico's largest field is the offshore Cantarell field (15 to 23 billion barrels). This field has peaked and output is in a steady decline. Many experts believe that Cantarell will decline precipitously in the next few years, with serious consequences for the Mexican economy.

Mexico's 2nd largest field is Chicontepec field (17 billion barrels).
