Germany has the largest economy in Europe and the 3rd largest economy
in the world. It is the world's largest exporter.
But like most developed economies, Germany does not produce enough
domestic petroleum to support its export-based economy and high standard
of living.
Germany must import 80% of its oil, mostly from the United Kingdom
and Norway (North Sea platforms).
To reduce its dependency on imported fossil fuels, the German government
emphasizes conservation and the development of renewable energy sources
such as solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal and biomass. As a result,
energy efficiency has been steadily improving.
