Russia is a vast country and controls enormous natural resources. In oil it is the 2nd largest producer in the world, only slightly less than Saudi Arabia.

Russian Siberia has vast mineral resources including oil and natural gas. It is becoming an increasingly important source for the energy hungry economies of East Asia, esp. China, Japan and South Korea.

The new offshore oil fields of Sakhalin Island has 14 billion barrels of proven reserves.
