CANADA

Canada has one of the world's richest economies and is one of the few developed nations that exports oil.

Most Canadian oil and gas deposits are in the western provinces: British Colombia, Saskatchewan and especially Alberta. The Athabasca Oil Sands of Alberta have almost 1.7 trillion barrels of potential oil -- giving Canada the 2nd largest proven reserves of petroleum in the world.

These oil reserves combined with abundant hydroelectric power insures that Canada will have cheap energy for decades to come.

But the western provinces can ship their oil to the United States more cheaply than to eastern Canada. In consequence, the industrial heartland of Ontario and Quebec often have to import oil, which leads to considerable political friction between Western and Eastern Canada.

The Athabasca Oil Sands, along with the Orinoco Oil Sands in Venezuela, are the largest oil sand deposits in the world. The Venezuela sands may be more profitable to extract than the Canadian, at $16 a barrel compared to $20 a barrel.
