Belgium sits in a dense net of railroads, canals. industry, and ports. But the country has virtually no natural resources and the economy is heavily dependent on world trade.

Like other developed economies, Belgium does not produce enough domestic petroleum to support its export-based economy and high standard of living.

Belgium actually imports more oil than it consumes: one-third of the imported petroleum is refined or manufactured and then re-exported.
