ALGERIA - People's Democratic Republic of Algeria

Fossil fuel forms the backbone of the Algerian economy. Oil and gas bring in almost all of the country's export revenue and make up a third of the total economy.

Algeria has 12.5 billion barrels of proven reserves but the unproven reserves are believed to be much higher. Algeria is also one of the world's leading producers and exporters of natural gas.

Algerian oil revenue is subject to global price swings, but has suffered from inefficient and overly-centralized government policies as well as many years of civil war with Islamic rebels.

Most Algerian oil fields are deep in the Sahara desert.
