Paleo-Geography

  • Pangea supercontinent combines all major landmasses
  • Panthalassa combines all oceans except Tethys
  • Climate swings widely between hot and cold extremes
  • Huge deserts - Carboniferous swamp forests dry up
  • Paleozoic Era ends with Permian Mass Extinction - worst
in earth's history with 95% of all life destroyed

Life

Hot dry conditions favor the   first modern trees, the
gymnosperms (left) such as   conifers, ginkos and cycads.   They spread with seeds   covered in a protective shell.

Two great branches of animal life appeared in the Permian. The Archosaurs (like Chasmatosaurus,

and birds. The
Therapsids (like Lycaenops,
far right) grew into the Cynodonts, Mammals, and ultimately, humans.
